Why Visit the Zanzibar Outer Islands?
Most Zanzibar visitors focus their entire trip on the main island of Unguja — and understandably so, given the quality of beaches, culture and activities available there. But Tanzania’s island chain extends far beyond Unguja, and the outer islands of Pemba, Mafia and Mnemba offer experiences that are genuinely world-class in their own right. For divers and snorkellers, Pemba and Mafia rank among the finest destinations in the entire Indian Ocean. For those seeking ultimate exclusivity, Mnemba is one of Africa’s most celebrated small luxury retreats. For marine wildlife encounters — whale sharks, dolphins, turtles, manta rays — the outer islands are simply unmatched in the region.
The practical barrier to the outer islands is higher than for the main island — reaching Pemba requires a domestic flight or long ferry crossing, Mafia requires a domestic flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, and Mnemba requires a boat transfer from Matemwe beach. But this higher practical bar is precisely why these islands remain so pristine. The effort filters out mass tourism and ensures the reefs, beaches and forests remain in extraordinary condition.
Diving in Pemba Island — A World-Class Experience
Pemba Island’s diving is regularly cited by experienced divers as among the finest they have ever encountered. The island sits on a deep-water plateau and the walls that drop from 10 to 600 metres around its perimeter are covered in exceptional hard and soft coral growth — pristine because the island receives so few visitors. The nutrient-rich currents that upwell against these walls sustain large populations of pelagic fish including barracuda, trevally, kingfish and tuna, while hammerhead sharks and grey reef sharks are regular sightings. Whale sharks pass through the channel between Pemba and mainland Tanzania from October to February.
The dive sites around Pemba include the Fundu Gap, Mesali Island and the remote northern tip at Ras Kigomasha, where the wall diving is virtually untouched. Fundu Lagoon, one of Tanzania’s finest eco-lodges, operates its own PADI dive centre and offers both beginner and advanced courses. If you are a serious diver planning a liveaboard or intensive diving trip to the Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba should be the centrepiece of your itinerary. Mafia Island Marine Park — Whale Sharks & Pristine Reefs
The Mafia Island Marine Park, established in 1995, was Tanzania’s first marine protected area and remains its most biodiverse. The park encompasses over 800 square kilometres of marine habitat and is home to at least 400 species of fish, 50 species of coral and 5 species of sea turtle, including nesting populations of green and hawksbill turtles on Juani Island. The seagrass meadows inside the park lagoon support one of the largest dugong populations remaining in East Africa — though sightings require luck and patience.
The headline wildlife experience at Mafia is swimming with whale sharks. These gentle filter-feeders — the world’s largest fish, reaching up to 12 metres — congregate in the waters off Mafia from October to February each year, drawn by the plankton blooms that follow the short rains. A marine park boat takes snorkellers out to find the sharks — usually spotted within 30–60 minutes — and entering the water alongside one of these extraordinary animals is an experience that ranks among Africa’s finest wildlife encounters. Mnemba Atoll — The Ultimate Private Island Experience
Mnemba Island is 1.5 kilometres in circumference — you can walk the full perimeter in twenty minutes — yet it contains one of the Indian Ocean’s most celebrated luxury retreats. Mnemba Island Lodge, a &Beyond property, hosts a maximum of 24 guests in ten beachfront bandas, offering complete privacy, outstanding food and exceptional marine guiding. The surrounding marine reserve, closed to fishing, means the reef immediately surrounding the island is in pristine condition: coral cover, fish density and water clarity are consistently among the best in East Africa.
Spinner dolphins are regularly encountered on morning boat trips from the island — pods of dozens of animals are a common sight, and swimming among them in the open water is an extraordinary experience. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the island’s beaches from November to February, and guided turtle walks at night are available to guests. The atoll is also accessible on day trips from the Matemwe coast — a useful option for those who want to experience the reef without committing to the lodge’s rates. View our Mnemba Atoll packages for full details.
Island Hopping the Zanzibar Archipelago
For the ultimate Zanzibar experience, a multi-island itinerary combining two or more of the archipelago’s islands is increasingly popular — and something our team specialises in arranging. A classic seven-day island-hopping route might combine two nights in Stone Town, two nights on Unguja’s north coast for beach and snorkelling, and three nights on Pemba or Mafia for world-class diving. Longer itineraries can incorporate all three outer islands. Domestic flights between the islands are short (25–40 minutes) and we handle all logistics including transfers, accommodation, dive arrangements and excursions as a seamless package.
