Zanzibar Family Travel Guide

Kid-friendly beaches, family resorts, activities for all ages and practical advice — everything you need to plan an unforgettable family holiday in Zanzibar.

Is Zanzibar a Good Destination for Families?

Yes — emphatically. Zanzibar is one of East Africa’s best family destinations, offering an exceptional combination of safe, calm beaches, fascinating wildlife encounters, interactive cultural experiences and genuinely warm hospitality towards children. The island is considerably less crowded than comparable Indian Ocean destinations, and the pace of life is perfectly suited to families who want to relax between activities rather than rush between sights.

The best beaches for families — particularly Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast — offer shallow, calm lagoons that remain swimmable throughout the day regardless of the tide. There are no dangerous rip currents in these sheltered bays, and the water temperature year-round (around 26–29°C) means children can spend hours in the sea without discomfort.

Activities for children are plentiful: giant tortoises at Prison Island, sea turtles at the Nungwi sanctuary, spinner dolphin tours at Kizimkazi, interactive spice farm tours, dhow sailing, and introductory snorkelling are all well-suited to children from about age 5 upwards. Older children and teenagers often particularly enjoy kite surfing lessons at Paje and snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll.

Best Activities for Children in Zanzibar

Nungwi Turtle Sanctuary

All ages

The Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond at Nungwi houses sea turtles in a protected lagoon. Children can see hawksbill and green turtles up close — an unforgettable wildlife encounter for all ages.

Prison Island Tortoises

All ages

A short boat trip from Stone Town, Changuu Island (Prison Island) is home to a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises. Children can feed and pet these gentle giants, some over 100 years old.

Spice Farm Tour

5 and above

A hands-on tour through a working spice plantation lets kids taste fresh vanilla, smell cardamom and see cloves drying in the sun. Most tours include a delicious Zanzibari lunch and are highly interactive.

Dhow Cruise

All ages

A gentle sail on a traditional wooden dhow is a wonderful family experience. Afternoon sunset cruises are popular, and many operators cater specifically to families with snorkelling stops and fresh fruit on board.

Dolphin Watching

5 and above

Spinner dolphins congregate year-round in the waters off Kizimkazi on the south coast. Boat trips to see (and sometimes swim with) these wild dolphins are among the most popular family excursions on the island.

Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll

8 and above

With calm, clear water and an abundance of colourful reef fish and sea turtles, Mnemba Atoll is ideal for introducing older children to snorkelling. Confident young swimmers aged 8 and above particularly love it.

Stone Town Walking Tour

7 and above

A guided walk through Stone Town with a knowledgeable local guide brings history alive for older children. The House of Wonders, Old Fort and the former slave market tell powerful stories at a level kids can understand.

Best Family Resorts and Accommodation in Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s family resort scene has expanded considerably in recent years. The best family-friendly properties share certain characteristics: direct beach access on a calm, safe lagoon; interconnecting or family rooms that accommodate children without splitting the family; swimming pools or safe beach swimming areas; and a children’s menu or willingness to adapt dishes for younger palates.

Nungwi is the top choice for family accommodation. Several large beach resorts here offer dedicated children’s clubs, kids’ pools, family suites with space for travel cots and extra beds, and a safe lagoon beach directly in front. These all-inclusive or bed-and-breakfast properties take the stress out of family logistics significantly.

All-inclusive packages are particularly popular with families as they eliminate the daily calculation of food and drink costs and allow children to eat and drink freely throughout the day. Many families find that the convenience more than justifies any marginal premium over room-only rates.

For families who want a split itinerary combining Stone Town culture with beach relaxation, we recommend one to two nights in the historic quarter followed by five to six nights at a north-coast beach resort. Our complete travel guide and our team can help design the perfect family itinerary.

Practical Tips for Families: Health, Safety and Packing

Health

Zanzibar is a malaria zone and anti-malarial medication is strongly recommended for children as well as adults. Consult your GP or a travel clinic at least four weeks before departure to allow time for courses of medication that require advance starting. Bring a quality DEET-based insect repellent and use it especially at dawn and dusk. All children should be up to date with routine vaccinations. Hepatitis A, typhoid and rabies vaccinations are worth discussing with your travel clinic depending on your itinerary.

Tap water in Zanzibar should not be drunk. All quality resorts provide bottled water; always use this for drinking and brushing teeth. Carry oral rehydration sachets as stomach upsets, while not inevitable, can affect children more severely due to dehydration. Reef-safe sunscreen at SPF 50 is essential — the equatorial sun is intense and children burn quickly even on overcast days.

Safety

Zanzibar is generally a safe destination for families. Petty theft can occur in Stone Town; keep valuables out of sight and be aware of your surroundings in busy market areas. On the beach, be mindful of strong sun and ensure children wear UV-protective rash vests when snorkelling. Supervision in the sea is important — even in the calm north-coast lagoons, young children should always be closely watched. Check our packing list for a full health and safety kit for families.

Best Age to Visit

There is no perfect age — families visit successfully with babies, toddlers, teenagers and everyone in between. That said, children between five and fourteen often get the most out of Zanzibar: old enough to snorkel, participate in activities, and remember the experience, but young enough to delight in giant tortoises and turtle sanctuaries. The best months for families are June to August and December to January when rainfall is lowest.

Budget

Zanzibar offers exceptional family value compared to Maldives or Seychelles. A family of four can have a comfortable week in a good beach resort including flights, excursions and some meals for $4,000–$7,000 total — significantly less than comparable Maldives trips.
