Swimming with Whale Sharks at Mafia Island

Mafia Island is one of the world's premier whale shark destinations, offering predictable seasonal aggregations between October and February each year. These gentle filter-feeders — the largest fish on earth, reaching up to 12 metres — are drawn to the rich plankton blooms that form in the nutrient-rich waters around the marine park. Unlike many whale shark destinations, Mafia's strict regulations and low visitor numbers mean encounters feel intimate and undisturbed.

Trips depart early morning from Utende beach on the west coast, closest to the marine park's core zones. Groups are limited to eight snorkelers maximum per whale shark, and guests must enter the water quietly from the side of the boat without splashing. Our licensed guides have years of experience reading the whale sharks' body language and positioning guests for the best possible encounter. The $150 per-person fee includes marine park entry, full snorkel equipment, boat transfer and a guide briefing.

Diving Mafia Island Marine Park

Mafia Island Marine Park covers over 822 square kilometres of ocean, reef, lagoon and mangrove. The park's dive sites range from shallow coral gardens ideal for beginners to challenging deep-water channels for advanced divers. Kinasi Pass is the park's most celebrated dive — a powerful channel dive where strong currents attract eagle rays, barracuda, tuna and occasional hammerhead sharks. Forbes Bay offers a calmer, reef-covered alternative perfect for macro photography enthusiasts.

Visibility in the marine park typically ranges from 15 to 30 metres depending on the season, with the clearest conditions between June and October. Green sea turtles are resident throughout the year and are encountered on almost every dive. The park's lack of heavy dive traffic means the reefs are in exceptional condition — hard coral coverage and fish biomass that would be considered extraordinary by any standard. All equipment, boat transport and marine park fees are included in the $130 two-dive price.

Green Turtle Conservation on Mafia Island

Mafia Island hosts one of Tanzania's most important green turtle nesting populations. Between July and September each year, female turtles return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs — a behaviour called natal homing that can span decades. The WWF and local conservation groups have been monitoring and protecting Mafia's turtle nesting beaches since the 1990s, and the population is slowly recovering from decades of historical poaching.

Our guided night walks to the nesting beaches are conducted in absolute silence with red-filtered torches to avoid disturbing the turtles. Rangers are stationed on the beaches from dusk and radio guides when a turtle is confirmed to be nesting. The entire experience — watching a 150kg green turtle haul herself up the beach, excavate a nest chamber and lay 100 or more eggs — takes around 90 minutes and is one of the most moving wildlife experiences anywhere in Africa. The $60 fee directly funds ranger salaries and nest protection equipment.

Mangrove Forests & Cultural Experiences

Mafia Island's mangrove forests cover vast stretches of the island's sheltered coastline and provide critical habitat for juvenile reef fish, crabs, mudskippers and a remarkable variety of bird species. The boat tour winds through narrow creek channels where the mangrove canopy closes overhead, creating an atmospheric tunnel of twisted roots and dappled light. Kingfishers, herons, sunbirds and occasionally African fish eagles can be spotted along the route.

For a complementary cultural experience, the Kilindoni village walk offers an authentic introduction to island life. Mafia's population of around 40,000 people is predominantly Swahili-speaking and Muslim, with a culture shaped by centuries of Indian Ocean trade. The morning fish market is the social heart of the island, where dhow fishermen return with their overnight catch and traders haggle over yellowfin tuna, octopus, kingfish and lobster. Our local guide provides context and translation, ensuring a respectful and enriching experience for both visitors and community.

Practical Information for Mafia Island Activities

Most activities depart from Utende, the main visitor area on Mafia's west coast, closest to the core marine park zones. Getting to Mafia requires a charter flight — approximately 30 minutes from Dar es Salaam or 45 minutes from Zanzibar. The tiny airstrip at Kilindoni handles light aircraft only. Our packages include charter flight coordination, and most activities can be booked as standalone day trips if you are already on the island.

The marine park entry fee (currently $20 per day for non-residents) is required for all snorkeling and diving activities and is included in our listed prices. Mafia has no ATMs, so we strongly recommend arriving with sufficient Tanzanian shillings or USD for any additional purchases. Mobile coverage on the island is limited to one network. Our lodge partners have satellite Wi-Fi available, though bandwidth is limited — all part of the genuinely off-grid experience.
