Mafia Island Marine Park Diving
For scuba divers, Mafia Island Marine Park offers some of the most pristine diving in the entire Indian Ocean. The park’s reefs have remained largely undisturbed by mass tourism, with excellent visibility and extraordinary biodiversity. Highlights include the Kinasi Pass — a channel dive famous for strong currents and large pelagic species — and the coral gardens of Forbes Bay, teeming with nudibranchs, lionfish, moray eels and reef sharks.
Our Marine Park Dive Safari package offers seven nights and 14 guided dives, covering the park’s most celebrated sites. Green sea turtles are year-round residents and extremely common on most dives. Humpback whales pass through between July and October, and dolphins are regularly encountered in the deeper channels. All diving is conducted with fully qualified PADI instructors operating from dedicated dive boats.
Best Time to Visit Mafia Island
The best time to visit Mafia Island is during the dry season, which runs from June through October and again from December through February. During these months the sea is calm, visibility is excellent, and the island’s tracks and beaches are easily accessible. October through February is additionally the prime whale shark season, making this the most sought-after window for our Expedition package.
The long rains (March–May) bring lush greenery and significantly lower prices — accommodation rates can drop by 30–40% — but some lodges close and diving conditions can be more challenging. The short rains of November are usually brief and rarely disrupt activities. Green turtle nesting takes place primarily between July and September on Mafia’s northern beaches, overlapping perfectly with the dry season.

We recommend booking at least 8–12 weeks ahead during peak whale shark season (October to February) as both accommodation and charter flight seats are strictly limited.
