Why Mnemba Atoll is Zanzibar’s Premier Marine Destination
Mnemba Atoll sits 3km off the northeast coast of Zanzibar’s main island (Unguja), near the village of Matemwe. Unlike many “atoll” destinations around the world, Mnemba is a Marine Protected Area — access is controlled, fishing is prohibited, and the reef ecosystem has been allowed to recover to a state of extraordinary health. The result is some of the finest snorkeling and diving in the entire Indian Ocean: crystal-clear visibility, dense coral coverage and an abundance of marine life that has been systematically protected for decades.
The Mnemba Atoll Marine Protected Area is open to day visitors arriving by boat from Matemwe or Nungwi for snorkeling and diving, while the atoll’s private island — Mnemba Island itself — is home to the exclusive &Beyond Mnemba Island lodge, one of the most celebrated small lodges in all of Africa. Our packages span the full spectrum, from an accessible $150 day trip to the extraordinary $4,999 all-inclusive private island stay.
Spinner Dolphins at Mnemba Atoll
Mnemba Atoll is one of the most reliable locations in the Indian Ocean for encountering spinner dolphins. A resident pod of 50–100 spinner dolphins uses the waters around the atoll as their feeding ground year-round. Morning boat trips from Matemwe typically intercept the dolphins as they return from overnight deep-water feeding to rest in the shallower waters around the atoll. With a knowledgeable guide and careful boat positioning, in-water encounters — where the dolphins actively approach snorkelers — are common.
Spinner dolphins are named for their acrobatic leaping behaviour — an individual can spin up to seven times in a single leap — and encounters at Mnemba often include both aerial displays and underwater swimming alongside curious juveniles. Our guides follow strict dolphin welfare guidelines, approaching slowly, never chasing and allowing dolphins to approach snorkelers at their own pace. The $70 half-day dolphin swim is consistently rated the most memorable experience in all our Mnemba packages.
Snorkeling & Diving the Mnemba Reef
Mnemba Atoll’s reef is a 360-degree snorkeling and diving environment — whichever side of the atoll is sheltered from the wind on any given day offers calm, clear conditions for water activities. The reef wall drops from the surface to 30 metres on the eastern side, while the western lagoon offers shallower snorkeling over dense bommies of hard and soft coral. Hawksbill sea turtles are year-round residents, frequently encountered on both snorkel and dive trips.
For divers, Mnemba offers advanced wall dives, channel dives with strong currents and abundant reef fish, and seasonal manta ray aggregations between November and May. Visibility typically ranges from 20 to 30 metres. The reef’s protected status means fish biomass is exceptionally high — schools of hundreds of bigeye trevally, yellow snapper and surgeonfish are normal sightings, alongside moray eels, octopus, crocodilefish and occasional whale sharks during the season (October to February).
&Beyond Mnemba Island — Africa’s Most Exclusive Small Lodge
Mnemba Island itself — the private land at the centre of the atoll — is home to the legendary &Beyond Mnemba Island lodge. With just 12 beachside bandas (thatched bungalows) and a maximum of 24 guests at any time, the lodge operates on a completely all-inclusive basis: accommodation, all meals, all snorkeling and diving, all drinks and all transfers are included in the nightly rate. Staff-to-guest ratios are exceptionally high, and every aspect of the guest experience — from the bespoke hand-written daily schedule to the seafood menus written around the morning’s catch — reflects the lodge’s exceptional attention to detail.
Getting to Mnemba Island requires a short boat transfer from Matemwe (about 20 minutes), which adds to the sense of arrival on something truly private and extraordinary. The island has no roads, no motorised vehicles and no other structures visible from any point on the beach. The &Beyond Mnemba Island 3-night package at $4,999 per person is all-inclusive and represents outstanding value for Africa’s most celebrated small island lodge. Planning Your Mnemba Atoll Visit
The best base for visiting Mnemba Atoll by day is Matemwe village on Zanzibar’s northeast coast — the boat crossing is shortest (15–20 minutes) and the Matemwe-based boutique lodges are conveniently positioned for early morning departures to catch the dolphins before the wind picks up. Nungwi on the northern tip is a slightly longer crossing (30–40 minutes) but many Nungwi operators also run Mnemba Atoll day trips.
The Mnemba Atoll Marine Protected Area entrance fee is payable on arrival by boat and is included in all our package prices. The best time for snorkeling is year-round, with the calmest conditions during the dry seasons (June–October and December–February). Manta ray sightings peak between November and May. Whale sharks are occasional visitors year-round but most common October to February. Book at least 4–6 weeks ahead for boutique lodges in Matemwe during peak season.
