The Islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago
Pemba Island lies 50 kilometres north of Zanzibar's main island and is one of Africa's best-kept travel secrets. Its dramatic underwater coral walls drop hundreds of metres into the Indian Ocean, making it a magnet for serious divers. Mafia Island, located south of Dar es Salaam, is famous for its whale shark population (July–September) and its Mafia Island Marine Park — one of Tanzania's most important marine conservation areas. Prison Island, just a short boat ride from Stone Town, hosts a famous colony of giant Aldabra tortoises and makes an excellent half-day trip within a broader island itinerary.
How to Get Between the Islands
Getting between Zanzibar's islands is part of the adventure. Domestic flights connect Zanzibar Town (ZNZ) with Pemba (PMA) and Mafia (MFA) in under an hour, operated by small regional carriers. For shorter hops — particularly to Prison Island and day trips to Mnemba — traditional wooden dhows and modern speedboats are used. Best Time for Island Hopping
The optimal window for island hopping in the Zanzibar Archipelago is June–October, when the dry season brings calm seas, clear water visibility for diving and snorkelling, and reliable small-aircraft flight schedules. This period also coincides with Mafia Island's spectacular whale shark season (July–September). January and February offer a secondary dry window that is excellent for island hopping, with fewer crowds than peak season.
