Kendwa vs Nungwi: Which to Choose?
Both Kendwa and Nungwi are on Zanzibar’s north coast and within easy reach of each other, but they appeal to different types of traveller. Nungwi is better for: a wider choice of activities (PADI diving, deep-sea fishing, Mnemba Atoll day trips), more restaurants and bars, a larger choice of accommodation across all budgets, and a more vibrant social scene most evenings. Kendwa is better for: uninterrupted peace and quiet, the most spectacular west-facing sunsets on the island, fewer crowds, a more romantic atmosphere and the iconic monthly Full Moon Party.
Many of our most satisfied guests choose the Nungwi & Kendwa Beach Combo (five nights, $699) — spending three nights in Nungwi for activities and nightlife, then moving to Kendwa for two nights of genuine relaxation and (with careful date planning) the Full Moon Party. The transfer between the two is simple: a 15-minute walk along the beach or a 5-minute dala-dala ride. Our combo package arranges the transition seamlessly.
The Kendwa Full Moon Beach Party
The Kendwa Full Moon Beach Party is one of East Africa’s most famous events — a monthly all-night celebration on the beach at Kendwa Rocks Hotel that draws travellers from across Zanzibar and beyond. The party begins around 9 pm on the night of the full moon, with multiple music stages on the beach playing everything from reggae and hip-hop to traditional taarab. Fire shows, acrobatic performers and beach vendors create an extraordinary carnival atmosphere under the light of the full moon over the Indian Ocean.
The party typically runs until sunrise and is attended by several hundred travellers during peak season. Entry is free for guests staying at Kendwa Rocks, and available for a small fee for day visitors. Our Full Moon Party Weekend package includes two nights at Kendwa Rocks before the party night, giving you time to acclimatise and explore the beach before the main event. A recovery day on the beach the morning after is naturally built into the schedule.
Kendwa Sunsets & Beach Experience
Kendwa’s west-facing aspect is its defining feature. While most of Zanzibar’s east coast beaches face the sunrise, Kendwa watches the sun set directly over the ocean — a natural spectacle that unfolds every evening without obstruction. The sky turns through extraordinary shades of pink, gold and deep violet as the sun touches the flat ocean horizon, with the silhouettes of traditional fishing dhows visible against the burning colours. This nightly show is one of the most reliably beautiful natural experiences in all of Zanzibar.
The beach at Kendwa is also notable for its consistently calm swimming conditions. Like Nungwi, the natural lagoon formation on the north coast means that Kendwa’s water is swimmable at all states of the tide — a significant advantage over the east coast beaches where low tide can expose hundreds of metres of seagrass-covered sandflat. The water temperature averages 27–29 degrees Celsius year-round, making it the ideal temperature for extended swimming without a wetsuit.

Kendwa has a more limited accommodation supply than Nungwi, which means the best properties — particularly Kendwa Rocks and the beachfront boutique hotels — book up very quickly for Full Moon weekends and peak season. We strongly recommend booking at least 8–10 weeks in advance for Full Moon Party weekends and 6–8 weeks for general peak-season travel (July, August, December and January).
Our Kendwa packages all include private airport transfers from Zanzibar International Airport (approximately 70 minutes), accommodation in selected beachfront properties, and a sunset dhow cruise. Optional extras including snorkeling day trips and the Full Moon Party entry can be added at the time of booking.
