Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?+
The best time to visit Zanzibar is June to October during the long dry season. This period offers clear skies, low humidity, temperatures of 25–27°C, excellent diving visibility and the best kite surfing winds on the east coast. December and January are also excellent for beach holidays but prices are higher.
When is rainy season in Zanzibar?+
Zanzibar has two rainy seasons: the long rains (masika) from March to May, and the short rains (vuli) in November. April is the wettest month with over 300 mm of rainfall. The short November rains are milder and the island is still very visitable, particularly in the mornings.
Is Zanzibar good in December?+
Yes, December is excellent. It falls in the second dry season with hot sunny weather (30°C), minimal rainfall and perfect beach conditions. The only downside is peak-season pricing around Christmas and New Year, so book well in advance.
Can you visit Zanzibar year-round?+
Yes, Zanzibar is a year-round destination. However, April and May can be challenging due to heavy prolonged rain and some hotel closures. Every other month offers good to excellent conditions depending on your priorities.
When is the cheapest time to visit Zanzibar?+
March to May (long rains) offers the lowest prices, typically 30–50% below peak. November (short rains) is the second cheapest period at 20–35% off. June and October offer good value with much better weather.
When is the best time for a Zanzibar honeymoon?+
June to October is ideal for honeymoons — perfect weather, romantic sunsets and excellent conditions for couples’ activities like diving and sunset cruises. December to January is a close second with hotter weather and festive atmosphere.
When is the best diving season in Zanzibar?+
October to February offers the best overall diving conditions with visibility exceeding 30 metres at Mnemba Atoll and calm seas. The June–October dry season is also excellent, though surface conditions can be slightly choppier.
Is November a good time to visit Zanzibar?+
November offers mixed conditions: short afternoon rains but clear mornings, manta rays off Matemwe, whale shark season starting at Mafia, very few tourists and prices 25–35% below peak. It’s an excellent choice for budget-savvy travellers.

Understanding Zanzibar’s Two Dry Seasons

Zanzibar’s climate is governed by the monsoon system of the Indian Ocean. The island sits close enough to the equator (approximately 6 degrees south) to be warm year-round, but experiences distinct wet and dry periods driven by seasonal shifts in the trade winds. The two dry seasons are the most important planning consideration for visitors.

The long dry season (locally known as kiangazi) runs from June through October. This is driven by the south-east kusi trade wind, which brings dry air from the Mozambique Channel and pushes moisture away from the island. Temperatures during this period are slightly cooler than the wet season — averaging 25–27°C — humidity is low, and the sky is typically clear from sunrise to sunset. The kusi wind also brings the kite surfing season to the east coast, making June–October the prime time for Paje and Jambiani. Accommodation books up months in advance for July and August.

The short dry season runs from mid-December through February, driven by the north-east kaskazi wind. Temperatures during this period are higher (29–31°C) and humidity slightly elevated, but rainfall is minimal and beach conditions are excellent. This period coincides with the Northern Hemisphere Christmas and New Year holidays, making it the second peak season for demand — and prices reflect this. The whale shark season at Mafia Island and the diving season in the north overlap with this period, adding further appeal.

Zanzibar’s Wet Seasons — What to Expect

The long rains (masika) fall from March through May. April is typically the wettest month, with rainfall often exceeding 300 mm. These are not gentle tropical showers — masika rains can be intense, prolonged and accompanied by strong winds. Many resorts and lodges reduce capacity or close entirely during April and early May. That said, the rains are not continuous: mornings in March and May can be sunny, and a budget-conscious traveller who does not mind occasional disruption can find excellent prices and a completely uncrowded island during this shoulder period.

The short rains (vuli) arrive in November and typically ease by early December. These are shorter and less intense than the masika rains, with afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. November is a genuinely interesting month to visit — manta rays appear off the Matemwe coast, whale shark season at Mafia is getting started, the island is very quiet, and prices are typically 25–35% below peak levels. Mornings are often perfectly clear and excellent for beach and diving activities.

Best Time for Diving in Zanzibar

Diving is possible year-round in Zanzibar, but visibility and conditions vary significantly by season and location. The October–February period offers the best all-round diving conditions in the north of the island (Nungwi, Kendwa, Mnemba Atoll), with visibility often exceeding 30 metres and calm seas. This period also overlaps with whale shark season at Mafia Island and with mantas off Pemba.

The June–October dry season offers excellent diving conditions in most locations, though the kusi wind can create choppier surface conditions in the channels between islands. Water temperature ranges from 24°C in August to 29°C in February — a 3mm wetsuit is comfortable year-round. The dive sites around Mnemba Atoll and Pemba Island are renowned for their consistently outstanding visibility. Browse our Zanzibar diving packages for full details on the best dive sites and recommended timing.

Budget Tips by Season

The cheapest time to visit Zanzibar is March–May during the long rains, when many resorts offer rates 30–50% below peak. If you can be flexible about weather, May in particular offers a good compromise: rains are easing, prices remain low and the island is refreshingly green and uncrowded. The second cheapest period is November, during the short rains, when prices are 20–35% below peak and conditions are generally better than the masika season.

June and October are excellent value shoulder months: the long dry season is beginning (June) or ending (October), conditions are very good, but prices have not yet reached the July–August or December–January peaks. These months are our most commonly recommended option for budget-conscious travellers who still want good weather. Contact our team for current pricing across all months — we often have last-minute availability at reduced rates even in peak season.
