Why Zanzibar works for solo travellers

Easy to meet people

Paje’s kitesurfing scene and Nungwi’s beach bars attract a steady mix of independent travellers. Joining small-group excursions — Safari Blue, Mnemba snorkelling or a spice tour — is a natural way to share a day with others.

Compact and straightforward

Most of the island is within about an hour of Stone Town by road, so moving between culture and beach doesn’t eat into your trip. A private transfer on arrival and pre-booked drivers remove the guesswork.

Plenty to do on your own schedule

Walk Stone Town with a guide, take a cooking class, learn to kitesurf, dive the reefs or simply read in a hammock. You choose how social or how quiet each day is.

Support when you need it

Travelling alone is easier with someone to call. We stay in touch before and during your trip and can rearrange plans if the weather or your mood changes.

Where to stay when travelling solo

Pick a base with things happening within walking distance — it makes solo travel far easier.

  • Stone Town

Guesthouses and boutique hotels in the old town put restaurants, the Forodhani night market and the harbour on your doorstep. Two or three nights is ideal.

  • Paje

The most sociable beach village on the east coast, with kitesurf schools, cafés and relaxed lodges. The tide goes out a long way, so swimming depends on the time of day.

  • Nungwi

Lively restaurants and bars, easy swimming at most tides and boat trips to Mnemba. A good choice if you want a buzz in the evenings.

Solo travel tips

  • Use pre-booked transfers or taxis arranged by your hotel, especially after dark.
  • Beach sellers can be persistent; a friendly but firm “no, thank you” (“hapana, asante”) works best. Book excursions through your hotel or us rather than on the beach.
  • Avoid walking on empty beaches or unlit streets alone at night, and keep valuables in your hotel safe.
  • Dress modestly away from the beach — cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages. This is especially appreciated during Ramadan.
  • US dollars are widely accepted for hotels and tours; newer notes are preferred and older ones are often refused. ATMs are easiest to find in Stone Town.

Solo travel: your questions

Is Zanzibar safe for solo travellers?

Most solo visitors have a trouble-free trip when they take normal precautions: use arranged transport at night, avoid deserted beaches after dark, keep valuables secure and book tours through reputable operators. Check your government’s travel advice before you go.

Is Zanzibar suitable for women travelling alone?

Many women travel to Zanzibar solo. Dressing modestly away from the beach reduces unwanted attention, and staying in Stone Town, Paje or Nungwi keeps you close to restaurants and other travellers.

Do packages cost more for one person?

Hotel rooms are usually priced per room, so a single traveller pays a supplement compared with the per-person “two sharing” prices shown. Tell us your budget and we’ll suggest stays and shared excursions that keep costs sensible.

How can I meet other travellers?

Stay in Paje or Nungwi, join small-group excursions such as Safari Blue or Mnemba snorkelling, and try activities like kitesurfing lessons or cooking classes.
