Away from the busiest stretch of Nungwi, much of the coast is lined with small lodges rather than big resorts. Matemwe and the Michamvi peninsula in particular feel unhurried, with long walks at low tide and very little traffic.
The west-facing beaches of Kendwa and the Michamvi peninsula (facing Chwaka Bay) are two of the few places on the island where the sun sets over the water. A traditional dhow cruise at golden hour is one of the most requested experiences for couples.
Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adds history, rooftop dinners, spice farm visits and the Forodhani evening food market — a good contrast to lazy beach days.
