The hotel offers a limited number of sea-view rooms and garden bungalows with private terraces.

Should You Stay Overnight on Prison Island?
The question of whether to stay overnight on Prison Island is one of the most interesting accommodation decisions in the Zanzibar archipelago. For the vast majority of visitors, a half-day or full-day trip from Stone Town is entirely sufficient to experience everything the island has to offer — tortoises, snorkeling, history and beach. The island’s activities can comfortably be completed in 3–5 hours, and the dhow ride itself is part of the pleasure.
However, staying overnight transforms the experience entirely. By 4:30pm, when the last day-tripper dhow departs for Stone Town, the island becomes a different place. The tortoise sanctuary empties of visitors and the giant animals roam freely as they please. The tiny beach catches the last golden light of the day as Stone Town’s silhouette darkens across the channel. After dark, with no light pollution from the mainland, the star display over Prison Island is extraordinary. For honeymoon couples or travellers seeking genuine seclusion, the overnight stay at $299 is exceptional value.
The Best Stone Town Hotels for Prison Island Day Trips
If you are basing yourself in Stone Town for a Prison Island day trip, choosing a hotel within easy walking distance of the dhow pier (Forodhani seafront) makes practical sense. The Park Hyatt Zanzibar — at the northern end of Stone Town’s seafront — is the area’s only international luxury hotel, with a rooftop pool overlooking the Indian Ocean and rooms from around $350 per night. It is a 5-minute walk from the main dhow departure point.
At the boutique premium level, 236 Hurumzi (also known as The Tower Top Suite) offers one of Stone Town’s most celebrated rooftop accommodations — a beautifully restored merchant’s house with seven individually designed rooms and a legendary rooftop view. Jafferji House & Spa is another exceptional option, combining a traditional carved-door riad with a small rooftop pool. Both are between $120 and $250 per night. Budget travellers will find excellent guesthouses in the old town from $40–80 per night — Karibu Inn and Flamingo Guesthouse are perennial favourites for their central location and cleanliness.
Practical Tips for Booking Prison Island Accommodation
The Changuu Island hotel has very limited rooms — perhaps 10–15 total — and books up quickly during peak season (July, August, December, January). If an overnight stay on the island is your priority, book at least 2–3 months in advance. The hotel does not always appear on standard booking platforms, so contacting directly or through a specialist Zanzibar operator (like our team) is the most reliable route to securing availability.
For Stone Town hotels, booking 4–8 weeks in advance is generally sufficient except during the peak holiday periods of Christmas and New Year, when Stone Town’s best properties fill completely. Our team maintains availability relationships with Stone Town’s finest hotels at all price points and can usually find options even on short notice outside peak season. Getting to Prison Island from Stone Town Hotels
From any Stone Town hotel, the dhow pier at Forodhani is at most a 15-minute walk. Hotels in the central medina are typically 5–10 minutes on foot. Dhow operators are concentrated along the waterfront between the Arab Fort and the Big Tree, and trips can be booked on the spot in the morning or arranged the evening before through your hotel concierge. Fixed-price dhow transfers of $35 return are standard, though independent negotiation is possible.
Boats depart throughout the morning from around 7:30am and the crossing takes 15–25 minutes depending on sea conditions. The last return boat typically departs Prison Island at 5pm. Note that in rough weather (primarily during the long rains of April–May), dhow crossings may be cancelled — this is rare but worth keeping in mind if you have a fixed departure date. Our packages always include weather-contingency arrangements for such situations.
