Paje 3-Day Itinerary

East Coast Kite Surfing Capital & Tidal Flat Paradise

Kite surfing, tidal flat walks, seaweed farm tours and a sunset dhow cruise — three unforgettable days on Zanzibar's east coast.

Your 3 Days in Paje

A suggested day-by-day plan — adjust timings to suit your style.

Day 1

Arrive — Tidal Flat Walk & Sunset Dhow Cruise

Morning

Arrive at Zanzibar International Airport and transfer south to Paje (approximately 60 minutes). Check in to your beach lodge and take time to settle in. In the late morning, head straight to the beach — if the tide is low, you can walk far out across the exposed tidal flats, picking up starfish and watching local fishermen wade through the shallows.

Afternoon

After lunch at a beachside restaurant, join a guided tidal flat walk timed to the afternoon low tide. Your guide will introduce you to the seaweed farming women, explain the coastal ecosystem and point out marine life hidden in the sand and seagrass. The wide expanse of teal water and brilliant white sand at this hour is one of Zanzibar's most photogenic settings.

Evening

End your first day with a sunset dhow cruise departing from the beach in front of your lodge. These traditional wooden sailing boats catch the evening breeze and drift south along the coastline as the sun descends. Fresh fruit and soft drinks are served on board. By the time you return, you will be ready for a seafood dinner and an early night.

Day 2

Kite Surfing Lesson — Seaweed Farm Tour & Beach Afternoon

Morning

Rise early for your IKO kite surfing lesson — instruction begins at 8am when the wind is building nicely and the tidal flat is at its most forgiving. Your IKO-certified instructor will start with theory and safety, move to body dragging (being pulled through the water by the kite without a board) and, if conditions allow, introduce the board before the wind picks up fully at midday.

Afternoon

After lunch and a well-earned rest, join a seaweed farm village tour at low tide. Walk with a local guide through the rows of cultivated cottonii seaweed that line the shallow flats, learn about the farming process, and visit the village drying racks. The tour provides a fascinating window into the real lives of Paje's coastal community and lasts around two hours.

Evening

Spend the remainder of the afternoon on the beach — swimming, reading or simply watching the kite surfers launch and land on the flat. The kite beach at golden hour, with colourful kites pulling riders across the shining water, is a spectacular and energetic scene. Dinner at one of Paje's seafood restaurants rounds off a full and varied day.

Day 3

Snorkeling on Tidal Flats — Day Trip to Jambiani or Depart

Morning

Your final morning in Paje begins with an optional snorkeling excursion on the tidal flats, timed to the morning high tide. The reef edge beyond the flat comes alive with fish, and there is a good chance of spotting green sea turtles grazing on the seagrass. Alternatively, take a half-day bicycle ride south to Jambiani village, another traditional east coast settlement a short ride down the coast, for a change of scenery and a fresh seafood lunch.

Afternoon

If your onward schedule allows, spend the afternoon on the beach before a late transfer back to the airport or north to Stone Town. If you are extending your Zanzibar trip, Jambiani and Stone Town are both excellent next destinations — see our full east coast guide for ideas. Either way, Paje will have left a lasting impression: the wide sky, the kite-filled wind, the silence of the tidal flats at low tide.

Evening

Depart from Paje or continue to your next Zanzibar destination. Late flights from Zanzibar International Airport allow for a full final afternoon on the beach before heading to the terminal. We recommend allowing at least 90 minutes for the transfer from Paje to the airport during peak season.

Planning Your Paje Trip — Essential Tips

Three days is the minimum we recommend for Paje — it is enough time to experience both the activity side (kite surfing, snorkeling) and the slower pleasures of the east coast (seaweed farm walks, sunset dhow cruises, lazy beach afternoons). If you can extend to five or six days, you will have time to also visit Jambiani, take a dolphin tour at Kizimkazi, and explore more of the tidal flat coastline.

The best time for this itinerary is June through October when the southeast trade winds are reliable and the kite surfing conditions are at their peak. November through March offers calmer winds and excellent snorkeling conditions. Avoid travelling during the long rains (mid-March through May) when activities may be disrupted and some lodges close for the low season.

Getting to Paje from Zanzibar Airport

Paje is located on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, approximately 55 kilometres from the international airport. The journey by private transfer takes around 60 to 75 minutes depending on traffic, and costs between $25 and $40 for a private vehicle. Shared dala-dala minibuses also run this route for a fraction of the cost, though journey times vary considerably and luggage space is limited — not ideal if you are travelling with kite surfing gear.

All of our Paje holiday packages and this itinerary include private airport transfers as standard. If you are booking independently, we recommend arranging your transfer in advance — the touting at the airport can be overwhelming and it is easy to overpay if you have not confirmed a price beforehand. Contact us if you need help arranging just a transfer.

Tides & the Best Time to Visit the Tidal Flats

The tidal flats are the defining feature of Paje's landscape, but their character changes completely with the tide. At low tide, vast white sand banks stretch hundreds of metres out to sea, crisscrossed by the wading paths of local farmers. At high tide the beach narrows, the water deepens, and the conditions become ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Understanding the tidal cycle helps you plan each day to take advantage of both states.

The tide on Zanzibar's east coast follows a semi-diurnal pattern — two high tides and two low tides per day, roughly six hours apart. Free tide tables for Paje are available online. We build the tidal cycle into our itinerary planning as standard, ensuring that snorkeling outings hit the water at the optimal moment and tidal flat walks are timed to low water when the expanse of exposed sand is at its most spectacular.

Extending Beyond 3 Days — East Coast Combinations

Paje pairs naturally with Jambiani (8 kilometres to the south) for an extended east coast stay. Jambiani is quieter, more traditionally Swahili in character, and offers excellent snorkeling, a dawn dhow fishing experience and a relaxed village atmosphere. A combined Paje and Jambiani itinerary of six or seven days gives you the best of both east coast villages.

Adding Stone Town at the beginning or end of your east coast trip is also highly recommended. Zanzibar's historic capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with history, culture, cuisine and architecture. Most international flights arrive and depart via Stone Town, so it is easily added without extra backtracking. Our team can build a custom multi-destination itinerary combining Paje, Jambiani and Stone Town — just get in touch.

Food & Dining in Paje — What to Eat

Paje has developed a surprisingly good dining scene for a small east coast village. The restaurant strip along the main beach offers fresh seafood grilled over charcoal, coconut-based Swahili curries, fresh fruit smoothies and cold beer. Many properties have their own restaurants; if staying at a kite camp or guesthouse, you will often eat together with other guests — a sociable and enjoyable experience.

The local speciality is grilled seafood, typically served with rice, chapati or ugali (maize meal). Lobster, prawns, barracuda and kingfish are all commonly available at very reasonable prices compared to European destinations. Street food is also worth exploring — samosas, mandazi doughnuts and sugarcane juice are sold from roadside stalls and make excellent snacks between activities. Most restaurants can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets on request.

3 Days vs 5 Days in Paje

Three days is a satisfying introduction to Paje — long enough to experience both the activity side (kite surfing, snorkeling) and the slower pleasures (seaweed farm, sunset dhow). Five days gives you time to progress in kite surfing, add a dolphin tour at Kizimkazi, and enjoy a full rest day with nothing scheduled but beach, food and sunsets.

If you are serious about kite surfing progression, a seven-day stay is the sweet spot — long enough to complete the full IKO1 course and log meaningful water time in multiple wind conditions.
